The Application

1. The Karaoke files download but do not seem to play

This is a common problem and stems from not reading the note at the top of the table of karaoke files.

The karaoke files MUST be downloaded 'as-is' ie. they must be saved to your hard drive immediately and not after they have been displayed in your browser. The usual way to do this with most browsers is to Right-click over the file and select the Save option from the pop-up menu. If the file is simply clicked in the usual way then garbage will be displayed in the browser and the resulting saved file will be in html format and WILL NOT play.

This problem can be avoided completely if the files are downloaded DIRECTLY into the application using the utility that is accessible from the application main menu.

2. I cannot seem to synchronise the lyrics despite having them on the screen and having the music file set up

A common error is forgetting to select the correct mode on the record window when attempting to synchronise lyrics. Edit mode and record mode can be selected from the toolbar or menu. Edit mode allows you to change the text of the lyrics themselves. Record mode allows you to synchronise the song. It is impossible to do these functions the other way round. Full details are given in the helpfile.

3. I have downloaded the Superfile but do I really have to set up each song from the 'New Song' window?

It will take you forever if you load in the midi and karaoke files one by one using the 'New Song' window - this is why we have the Superfile. The superfile is designed to be integrated into the application directly rather than making you do it yourself.

If you go to the 'File' menu you will see 'Superfile'. Click on this and this will open the Superfile window. You need to tell the application exactly where the superfile is saved on your hard drive. Click on okay and give the application a few seconds to have a really good think. Once this is done ALL of the songs will be automatically setup on the songlist ready for immediate performance.

4. Some of the songs on the website/download are not included in the Superfile

Because the Superfile is large and bulky it takes a long time to upload. This means that we only update it about once every month. This inevitably means that its contents often lag behind the songs on the website. However, it is still the fastest way of integrating songs into the application.

5. The application works the first time I use it but a Runtime Error (Object was unloaded) occurs after that.

This is a recognised bug in versions 3.0.0 and 3.1.0. The problem has been rectified in version 3.2.1 so the only way to correct the problem is to upload the new version.

6. After installing the application the program just produces an error and will not run at all

There could be lots of reasons why this has occurred. The most likely is that you do not have the Visual Basic 5 Runtime file on your computer. This is a file that you need in order to use any application that has been written in the Visual Basic 5 language. We have chosen not to include this file in the main zip archive as most people have this file installed on their computer anyway from a different source. Information on obtaining and installing this essential file can be found here.

7. Why are there no mp3 files on the website?

Easy answer - they are illegal and we would be breaking the law by having mp3's on the website. Midi files are as least tollerated my the recording authorities. The application is primarily a karaoke EDITOR, ie. the idea is to synchronise the songs yourself. The files that we provide are just there to get you started. You can get mp3's from anywhere on the net just about (see my links page) then you can synchronise them yourself as long as you have the lyrics (also from the internet).

8. Can I edit midi files with this application to change the instuments for example?

No, this application is NOT a midi file editor. The application will play any midi file that you throw at it but it will always play the file AS IS. There are many midi editors out there that allow you to change the midi file as you like it. You can then get the Karaoke Editor to play the file in the usual way.

9. I have synchronised some songs but occasionally the titles of the songs in the songlist do not match the song that is loaded when it is clicked on.

This is an error in versions of the application prior to version 3.2.2. From version 3.2.3. the bug has been corrected and will not longer occur. See the information below on how to upgrade the application.

10. I click on the link to download the application but an error is generated and the zip file fails to start downloading.

Just occasionally the server that holds the application file and Superfile can be down. This means that it is impossible to download the application at that time. If you return to the site at a later date the file should once again be available.

11. Why do my .kar files not play on the application? / Why do the downloaded files not play on my .kar player?

The application does not support the playing of .kar files, they are used and produced in a different way. The karaoke files used are specific to this application and cannot be used by any other editor. The midi or mp3 files associated with the karaoke files can be used by any midi application.

12. When I try to play a song no sound is heard

There could be several causes. The midi output may be going to the wrong place (the default midi device is always used). Go to Control Panel > Multimedia > MIDI tab. The top box tells you where the midi output is going to. If this is either set to an external midi device and you are using the internal device (ie. output from your sound card) OR it is set to the internal device and you are expecting to get sound from an external midi device then you will not hear anything. Alternatively check that your speakers are plugged in and switched on! One other thing to check is that there is no other application currently running that uses the midi output.

Updates / Registration

1. How do I upgrade the application from an older to a newer version?

First you must uninstall the old version by either double clicking the uninstall program in the Gasman Karaoke folder supplied with the software. Alternatively remove the application using Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add / Remove Programs. Once this is done the new version can be installed in the usual way.

The contents of your songlist will be overwritten unless you keep the database file that stores this information. This can be done simply by copying the 'Song.mdb' file from the Gasman Karaoke application folder to a safe place. Once the new version of the application has been installed, the file can be moved back into the application folder replacing the blank database file.

2. Will I need to register again if I install a newer version?

No. The only time you would need to re-register the application is if you re-install windows at any point. To re-register you need the serial number - the same code that you used to register the application in the first place. For this reason YOU MUST KEEP THE KEY SERIAL NUMBER IN A SAFE PLACE or you will be unable to re-register without our help.

3. I have previously registered the application but lost the serial number

Now that was rather silly. Nevertheless, send us your details by email and we shall be happy to provide you with the serial number.

4. Can I still register if I do not have a credit card?

Yes. Go to the Share-It! registration site from the register page. This site will tell you how you are able to make payment by cheque, postal order, etc.
